Brtonigla
Today the town of Brtonigla, which is also the centre of the Brtonigla commune, is famous for its diligent winemakers, olive growers and as member of the Italian association “Città del vino”. The tourist slogan of Brtonigla is “small town of great discoveries” because along with the usual tourist offer guests can enjoy famous folk festivals explore karst caves, tour typical rural settlements of stone houses, go hunting or enjoy gathering mushrooms and asparagus.
Brtonigla is also the centre of the Local democracy academy of the Council of Europe, and during the summer hosts the International summer art school Hortus Niger. Hortus Niger was the name of this town in Roman times, which surely derives from the colour of soil. The feast on St. Roch’s Day, celebrated on August 16, is one of the greatest folk festivities in Istria.
